ITALY, UMBRIA, PERUGIA
Just ten minutes from Perugia, with a view of the city, Mount Subasio and Assisi, this castle dominates the Perugian countryside from the top of a small hill.
The building is crowned by a characteristic swallowtail battlements, dominated by the tall octagonal tower and by a corner wall which simulates a second square tower.
The building, situated in the most northerly point of the park which surrounds it, is on four floors including cellars, which are accessed both from the ground floor as well as the garden and, this part of the property was used as cellars, woodstore and storage.
On the ground floor, where the main entrance, still with its original perfectly preserved door is framed by a large stone portico decorated with family crests and painted stucco decorations.
Of the many rooms, it is worth mentioning in particular the Tapestry Room with its internally decorated bow windows, the Red Room, a study with a fireplace with family crest frescoes, a room with wooden panel ceiling and bow windows.
All the rooms of the property are still decorated with original plasterwork and frescoes.
The main reception room which leads to the first floor has marble steps and is in the tower of the building.
Here there is also a library with a small bow window, frescoed ceilings and plasterwork.
The top floor has no decorations as it was the servants' floor.
Finally the attic, where a new roof has just been put on.
An octagonal terrace at the top of the tower allows 360 degree views of the whole countryside and Perugia.
The park of six hectares surrounds the buildings and is fenced off with two main entrances with gates in the travertine and brick wall and two pedestrian gates. The park is crossed by a wide pine-lined driveway which leads to the castle, greens areas with flowerbeds and woody areas with tall trees.
A U-shaped stable block is on three floors including cellars and the stables themselves were built in wood and cast iron by the well-known English company Musgraves. There are also other outbuildings.
Various famous people have stayed in the castle including Marconi and Gabriele D'Annunzio, famous writer, poet and war hero.
In 1943-44 the castle was the seat of the German army.
The famous Mille Miglia race has stopped several times at the castle.
