Ideally located between Cannes and Saint Tropez, next to Frejus beach (7 km) and Saint Raphael (9 km), Puget sur Argens is a lovely historical little town that crowns a promontory surrounded by Provence typical countryside alternating olive groves and vineyards. A few km away from the coast, yet with fantastic views and rapid access to large stretches of sandy beaches among the most preserved of the Cote dAzur. Golfs and lakes with watersports can be found in the immediate surroundings. Puget sur Argens offers all shopping and amenities in a quiet and relaxing environment, yet very close to the lively French Riviera.
Frejus, first Roman port of the region, is famous for its historical treasures including 29 monuments such as the roman amphitheatre, the theatre, the aqueduct, the medieval cathedral and the city walls.
Nearby Saint Raphael is one of the jewels of the French Riviera. A spa resort at the time of the Romans, partially destroyed during barbarian invasions, Saint Raphael city centre was rebuilt in the 3rd Republic urban style. Lining the Old Port, cours Jean-Bart and quai Albert-Ier are very lively. Promenade Rene-Coty and boulevard du General-de-Gaulle, planted with plane trees and palm trees, provide a beautiful view over the sea and the twin rocks known as the «Earth Lion» and the «Sea Lion».
The old city with narrow streets, the old port, daily open flower and food markets will definitely charm you. For your shopping, the Marine district turned in the 19th century from the sailors district into a very chic sea resort with its casino, beautiful villas, offers the best shopping you can get. The leisure port, Santa Lucia, is the 3rd largest of the French Mediterranean coast.
For nature lovers, the Esterel or Massif des Maures mountains (both nearby) and the gorges du Verdon canyon (90 km) are a must.
The Esterel is a low-lying, ravined mountain range extending to the sea with promontories, deep creeks, headlands and beaches. Its fire-red colours form a striking contrast with the indigo blue of the Mediterranean. The Corniche dOr coastal road running between Frejus/St-Raphaël and Cannes is a great way of exploring the area.
The Massif des Maures mountains stretches from Hyeres to Puget sur Argens, with emerald-green vegetation reaching between the sea and the Gapeau and Argens valleys. Discover numerous resorts , their viewpoints and charming landscapes; the Corniche des Maures is a magnificent road for touring. The interior was long isolated and remains wild. It is home to interesting sites such as the village of Grimaud, Verne Monastery and the villages of Collobrieres and Bormes-les-Mimosas.
To enjoy le Verdon you must take the Route de la Corniche Sublime which begins at Comps-sur-Artuby, a former stronghold of the Templar Knights. The village is at the foot of a rock crowned by the 13C Eglise St Andre where the views over the Artuby gorge and the Provencal landscape are really worth the climb. The road then heads for the amazing Balcons de la Mescla overlooking the Verdon. Continue on past the two Tunnels de Fayet which command a breathtaking view of the curve of the canyon, turning into the Falaise des Cavaliers. The latter towers above the precipice between 250 and 400m high and stretches out over 3km. Then the road leads into the Cirque de Vaumale offering splendid views on the way out. On your way back to St Raphael, the turquoise Lac de Ste-Croix into which the Verdon flows, and the attractive village of Moustiers-Ste-Marie , reknowned for its fine ceramics are well worh a stop.
