La Herradura itself is about 1.5km away and its most obvious feature is the 2km long horseshoe shaped bay, where the charming beach has several beach bars and restaurants, as well as clubs and facilities for a variety of water sports.

The charming old town of Almunecar, overlooked by the remains of its Moorish castle, is 4 km along the coast (or 6 km by a different road) and has a wide variety of amenities, including excellent shops, restaurants and commercial facilities. There are two large beaches and an aqua theme park.

For golfers, there are three 18 hole courses within about half an hour's drive. All are situated in beautiful surroundings and benefit from considerably lower green fees than some of the Championship standard courses around and beyond Malaga, as well as usually being less crowded.

Also within easy reach are the Sierra Nevada Mountains, a drive of about an hour and half and providing excellent skiing facilities with slopes for all ages and abilities.

Closer at hand to the west is the well known resort town of Nerja, whilst a drive not to be missed is the inland route to the city of Granada, with its famous Alhambra Palace, about an hour's drive away.

THE COSTA TROPICAL

La Herradura marks the beginning of the Costa Tropical, sometimes also known as the Costa Granada, which stretches as far as Albunol. It has been much less developed than the better known costas - Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca - and has retained much more of its original “Spanish feel”, much to the delight of those who live there or visit for holidays.

This, in part, accounts for its increasing popularity, aided by its delightful micro-climate, beautiful scenery and the warmth, welcoming and friendliness of its Spanish residents.

Malaga Airport is 80 kms away and can be reached comfortably in less than an hour. Malaga Station is the terminus for the high speed train service, providing access to Madrid in about two hours.
