The coast is beautifully shaped and took its name of Cote Vermeille (vermilion coast) after the colour of its rocky schist steep hills at sunshine. From Cerbere to Collioure the scenic road unveils a dramatic landscape of mountains and hills rolling down into the sea. The area is also a famous vine growing area producing strong red wines and renowned ‘vins cuits’ such as Banyuls and Maury. A beautifully preserved natural site recently re-developed in Paulilles offers a succession of natural and unspoilt coves. On top of being known for its wines and dramatic scenery the Vermilion coast is also famous for being a diving and snorkling paradise.
