VILLAGE OF ROCHEGUDE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA
The village of Rochegude occupies a wonderful hill-top position overlooking a vast plain in which some of the most famous wines of France have their origins. It is a village with an ancient foundation dating from Roman times, whilst its two famous chapels date back over 800 years and a thousand years respectively. Other notable features are the Great Fountain in the village centre, the castle and the famous Chateau de Rochegude Hotel and Restaurant. The village offers excellent local facilities.
This is a beautiful part of the Drôme département, where vineyards are one of the dominant features. Famous wines produced in the area include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Côtes du Rhône and Chateauneuf du Pape. Other notable crops of the region are lavender, truffles, sunflowers, wheat and olives.
One of the nearby villages is Grignan, which has a magnificent castle of twelfth century origins; this was greatly enlarged in the seventeenth century and then restored to its former Renaissance glory from its ruinous state in the early twentieth century. It is now a major tourist attraction. The village is named after the Grignon family, who were the principal land owners for a long period.
The city of Orange takes its name from the Dutch Princes of Orange, a reminder of its inclusion in the Dutch Republic, later to become the Netherlands, and the part that it played in the Franco – Dutch wars of the seventeenth century. The city is a major cultural centre and is famous for its Roman architecture, particularly the Roman theatre, whilst the later Triumphal Arch is another major attraction.
Like Orange, Vaison-la-Romaine is situated in the neighbouring Vaucluse département and is also easily reached from the property. This is another town which is rich in history, with many Roman influences and the medieval upper town, which is separated from the lower town by the Ouvèze river.
Other tourist attractions include the field of the Battle of Montmirail, which took place on 11 February 1814 and resulted in victory for the French under Napoleon 1 and defeat for the Russian army; Mont Ventoux, generally considered to be one of Europe’s most famous mountains, partly because of featuring in the Tour de France and sometimes known as the “Beast of Provence”; Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, a small village built around a spring at the foot of a steep cliff 230 meters high, this being the biggest spring in France and the fifth largest in the world, with an annual flow of 630 million cubic metres; and finally, Gordes in the Luberon, recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Finally, there is probably the most visited – and the most stunning – of all, the beautiful city of Avignon, with so much more than its famous bridge to captivate its visitors. Situated on the left bank of the Rhône in the Vaucluse département, Avignon is rich in history, architecture, culture and a great deal more besides. Its most famous period was that of the Avignon Papacy, when it was home to seven successive popes between 1309 and 1377, with papal control continuing until 1791 when, during the French Revolution, it finally became part of France.
As if all of the above was not enough, there is the magnificent, peaceful and alluring countryside of Provence, with its rivers and gorges, lavender fields and vineyards, the nearby Maritime Alps and the frequently dramatic coastline, notably the Calanques between Marseille on the west and Cassis on the east. With so much to enjoy in this most beautiful and fascinating part of France, the sale of this fine property provides a wonderful opportunity for the many who love the region.
