A lovely C14th property, right in the centre of the medieval part of the charming town of Martel with its distinctive sky-line of medieval towers and lies a little north of the Dordogne river in the Lot department. It was the former capital of the Viscount of Turenne and much remains of its medieval past.
Built over 4 floors, there is also a small terrace garden, enough to sit outside and enjoy a BBQ, “al-fresco” dining, and even space for a jacuzzi. On the ground floor, entered via a superb old door, you have an entry, small corridor, shower room / laundry, ground floor bedroom, plus a shop front (currently let for a small income), with a sales space of 15.5m2;
On the 1st floor is the main living area, and here you find a superb C16th fireplace dominating the salon of 30m2, and there is a kitchen / dining room of 20m2. 2nd floor - 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, WC, and a small study. 3rd floor - 2 further bedrooms, WC, (shower room possible).
This character property has an intriguing mix of modern comforts and older features. There are some wonderful old oak floors, with wide planks, and a magnificent stone fireplace.
The property benefits from mains drainage, and is literally a hop, step and a jump from the covered market place in the centre of Martel. Well known for its seven towers, there is a very interesting time to be spent wandering round Martel, since almost every street offers something different. Lots of impressive doorways, beautiful arches, half-timbered houses, wooden shutters and, of course, the 7 towers. Of special interest is the “Place de la Halle” - the town's beautiful market place, with a very detailed wooden roof and this sits in the middle of the town's main square surrounded by the Palais de la Raymondi and many other beautiful buildings including the Tour des Penitents, (one of the seven towers). Market days in Martel are Wednesday and Saturday mornings. In December and January there is a Truffle market. From Martel you can travel in the summer months on a steam train to Saint-Denis, a 13km round trip on the edge of a cliff about 80m high and so offering some fabulous views over the Haut-Quercy countryside.
Martel has a good selection of shops, bars & restaurants, and is convenient for tourist spots such as Rocamadour, Sarlat and Padirac. With good access to the autoroute network, and Brive airport, it is possible to leave central London on a Friday afternoon, and be enjoying a meal on the square in Martel later that evening.
