Locality: Zejtun
Zejtun, a wonderful city located in the South Eastern part of the island, is centered around two older village cores, that of Bisqallin and Hal Bisput, that still keep the same ambiance they had several centuries ago. Zejtun is considered one of the oldest parishes on the island, with its original parish church being built as early as the twelfth century. The name of the city comes from the Arabic word for olives, 'zejtuna'. Zejtun is also known by its title, Citta Beland which was given to the city by Grandmaster Ferdinant von Hompesch in 1797. Zejtun has a rich cultural heritage, and some of the most important buildings found in the area include Saint Catherine of Alexandria's Parish Church, a church dedicated to Saint Gregory, several medieval chapels, as well as the archaeological complex of an old Roman villa. The feast in honour of the city's patron saint is celebrates annually in June. Zejtun also holds an annual olive picking festival.
