16' O'Day Daysailer 16' 1971

Beautiful, fully restored rare Mk1 O'Day 16' Daysailer for sale. Professionally restored by a group of passionate Long Island boatbuilders in Oct 2018. Includes trailer, main and roller furling jib, mast, boom, standing and running trigging. Centerboard works perfectly. Sail ready for Spring and Summer. Needs nothing.

I am reluctantly selling this beautiful 16’ O’Day Mk1 Daysailer as we are moving back to Europe. We owned the boat for 3 years before performing a full hull and deck restoration. Hull was sanded down to fiberglass, epoxy primed and epoxy lacquered black, with 6 layers. Interior of hull is Awlgripped buff in several layers. Deck is a custom lightweight Flexiteak that looks great and gives perfect wet weather traction. The sails are not the newest but have no stains or tears and are perfectly usable for cruising and daysailing. Jib is on a practical furler so boat can be furled in seconds from cockpit. Mainsail has one reef point. In winds over 20knots this boat can be sailed with a reefed main or just the jib safely. If you intend to race you might want to get a new set of sails (and they are very reasonable)

We made a custom made thwart for rowing and even installed beautiful bronze oarlocks. All the wood was renewed or refinished with varnished mahogany (except the floorboards – which were already varnished with 3 coats) Oar is included.

We have invested much more than the asking price. This 16’ Oday Daysailer is one of the very few, lightweight MK1 models which still have the practical open cockpit and cuddy with storage shelves. These early models also have classy bronze hardware and the elegant wooden cockpit moldings, which have been replaced with fiberglass on later models. The newer versions have a locker and closed compartments which are usually waterlogged, add weight and make the cockpit space smaller. You can put a cooler, stereo and tent in the cuddy and this boat makes the ultimate pocket cruiser for two. Sleeping in the cockpit (possible with the Mk1) and with a boom tent you can be completely snug and protected from any weather. Beaching is easy thanks to the kick up rudder and the centerboard. Bronze centerboard mechanism works perfectly (unlike the newer version block and tackle). Raising and lowering happens in a second.

Trailer the O’Day 16’ to a new lake or coast and set her up in 20 minutes. This is probably the very best Daysailor on the market today. Fairly priced and ready to provide unforgettable pleasures.
