Description

Bargain House with garden in Medieval village, surprisingly large terraced house in the medieval village of MontauxleCrenaux in the Gers. Only ten minutes from Auch, the capital of Gascony.

The 17th century house is situated in the centre of the village, directly opposite the historic gate house and the village hall and only two minutes from the primary school.

Forget its modest exterior; this house is full of surprises! Not least the wonderful south facing covered terrace with summer kitchen and steps down to the garden.

On the ground floor you will find two large reception rooms, a guest bedroom, and a large, partially equipped kitchen with French windows leading to the large terrace and garden. You will also find a laundry room, bathroom, toilet and a small courtyard with storage areas and unexploited attic space.

Climb the wooden staircase to discover the delightful master bedroom which comes complete with furniture and loads of French charm! You will also find a second bedroom under the eaves, a toilet and washbasin and enough space to install a shower.

Through an arched entrance this village house also provides you with parking for two cars and a work area for the DIY fan.

Other features that add to the charm of this house are the terracotta floor tiles laid in a striking design, a lovely oak fireplace, a mixture of stone and timber framed (colombage) walls and original oak beams. You will also appreciate the double glazing and central heating.

Montauxles-Crenaux has preserved much of its historic past: the gatehouse, chateau, listed church and fortifications.

Montauxles-Crenaux has approximately 650 residents but has an active village life with many different associations providing gym, pottery, boules and theatre groups. Every year the village organises a Christmas market in December, a flower market in May, the village fete in August and a festival of paintings in September. There is a weekly market. For nature lovers the Pilhat Woods are close by and provide nine nature trails covering about 35 miles in total.

From the house you have views of the gate house, the village hall and the lovely surrounding countryside.

The department of Gers is often described by those who know France as an excellent area to visit, if not the best area of France for Brits who want to relocate. It is not over-run however and indeed, the department has a diverse array of assets to discover, some of them are obvious; the rolling countryside, very mild climate, the Pyrenees mountains, whilst others remain more subtle like the hearty food, local culture, street markets and Gascon traditions. Foreigners often refer to the area as Gascony, referring to the former French province.

The department is generally an agricultural area where the local gastronomy is highly regarded by both French nationals and foreign expats. The most cultivated crops in Gers are Colza, Grain, Sunflowers and Corn. Some of the older locals may speak a Gascon patois, but its usage remains in decline among the younger generations. The largest Gersoise towns in terms of number of inhabitants are Auch, Condom and Fleurance but even these are not overly large.
