Built for the Hon. William Stairs in 1880, eight years after The Dominion Government built a bridge connecting Herman's Island to the mainland, Linden House was the first summer residence to be built on Herman's Island. Upon completion, William Stairs of Halifax arrived to much fanfare with his span of horses, coachmen and servants. Summers, his Scottish built steam yacht took residents to church in Lunenburg on Sundays. The granite ship's ballasts, from trade between Scotland and Nova Scotia, were used in the construction of this home's foundations. Later custodians converted the house to a country inn advertised in the travel guide for Canadian railways, with a horse drawn coach from the railway station in Lunenburg to its door. This house and gardens, have been gently and thoroughly restored over decades, and feature an original carriage shed, garden shed, simple 1940's style seasonal cottage, an in-ground pool and gazebo, with sweeping views across fields to the Lunenburg Yacht Club, a three minute walk away.
