The Gateway to Royal Deeside

Originally a fishing village built around the High Street, and formerly known as Stonehive, the town has grown to a population of around 11,000.

The sense of history, with the impressive ruined fortress of Dunnottar Castle, the awe inspiring views of the sea and harbour, the friendliness of the local people, combine to make Stonehaven special.

Stonehaven is the main county town of Kincardineshire and the Mearns, although, due to Local Government changes, the town now lies within Aberdeenshire.

In August 2010, Stonehaven was voted the best seaside town in Scotland in a survey carried out by the Bank of Scotland which looked at the quality of life in coastal towns throughout the country, looking at factors such as crime rates, weather, property prices and earnings.

Directions

Once in Stonehaven, follow signs for the harbour. Pass The Marine hotel and blue double garage doors after which you immediately turn right. Another sharp right brings you to your parking space to the rear of the property. Alternatively from Stonehaven, drive towards the harbour and turn right down King St. Turn right at the end of the road into Wallace Wynd. Fisherman's Cottage is 50m on the left.

Stonehaven is 15 miles (24 km) south of Aberdeen in a sheltered position on Stonehaven Bay between the Carron Water and the Cowie Water. Stonehaven lies adjacent to a deeply indented bay surrounded on three sides by higher land between Downie Point and Garron Point. The harbour, consisting of two basins, was improved in the 1820s by the engineer Robert Stevenson (grandfather of the author Robert Louis Stevenson) and became an important center of the 19th century herring trade; the harbour is bordered on the north by Bellman's Head and at the south by Downie Point. At the western edge of Stonehaven west of the A90 road lies the village of Kirkton of Fetteresso. Fowlsheugh is a nearby coastal nature reserve, known for its seventy metre high cliff formations and habitat supporting prolific seabird nesting colonies.
